SHARP/autoSHARP installation - getting started

1. decide under which user account to install :

Some recommendations:

• in principle any user account should be ok
• installing under the "root" account is not recommended, since this can give problems when trying to start the httpd (part of the standard graphical user interface (GUI) for SHARP/autoSHARP). It is still possible, but you might have to tweak the httpd configuration accordingly.
• installing under your own user account should be fine - and might be the easiest and fastest way to get everything up and running anyway. But it might also mean that other people sharing this computer with you could have problems running the software (especially through the standard httpd-based interface) due to permissions etc.
• if you have a generic "software" account for installations of all your software it would be good to use this for installing SHARP/autoSHARP as well.
2. create an empty directory :

mkdir ~/sharp-2.6 cd ~/sharp-2.6

3. download and save files in this directory :

GPhL_SHARP_install.sh GPhL_SHARP.darwin.tar - or - GPhL_SHARP.linux.tar

4. save the licence keys (sent by email to you) as :

.licence

5. setup environment :

With this we mean settings according to the recommended way for those external packages. If your setup uses a different system (wrapper scripts, aliases or such things) the installation script will not be able to handle those.

• the installation will run much smoother (i.e. without asking you too many questions) if your environment contains the normal settings for the required external software packages.
• especially the settings for CCP4 should be up-to-date and correct. The latest version of CCP4 (6.1.1) is recommended.
• additional software requirements (to make use of some features): shelxc/d and ARP/wARP (latest versions)
• the existence of mapman is not necessary since it is only used when looking at electron density maps with O
6. run the installation script :

chmod +x ./GPhL_SHARP_install.sh ./GPhL_SHARP_install.sh

7. using the software :
• To use autoSHARP through CCP4i (requires latest CCP4 6.1.1 with updates) :

source ~/sharp-2.6/setup.csh # for tcsh/csh

or

. ~/sharp-2.6/setup.sh # for sh/bash/zsh/ksh

Then start CCP4i and go to the "Experimental Phasing" module.

• to use SHARP/autoSHARP through the standard httpd-based interface :
• check the messages towards the end of the installation above - there should be the URL given for the running server
• this URL is usually something like

http://localhost:8080/

• connect with the username/password also given towards the end of the installation
